About

MetaPlay Participative Theatre, Arts and Media was set up to advance theatre and the associated arts in and with communities.

Since its inception in 2005, MetaPlay’s aim has been to create projects that bring people together through their exploration of art and art forms and to develop ways for people to explore new sets of relationships together, with an underlying ethos of facilitating ‘play’ as a restorative, relational facility than enhances our lives.

Now in our 15th year, we have worked in a variety of ways; from developing site-specific performances to running weekly ‘drama clubs’ with children and old age pensioners. We have collaborated with artists, filmmakers, actors and facilitators who have lent us their skill and expertise. Up to 2015, all our projects have been free at the point of use to all communities we have engaged with.

2016 Marked a point of bringing our participative aesthetic and ethos to wider art and and theatre audiences, using pop-up and rugged spaces to create theatre, films and creative experiences for risk taking and community audiences. We took our pilot audience-collaborative work ‘Gimme, Gimme, Gimme More: LOVE!’ for adult audiences exploring themes of lust, love and dating with your clothes on, to the Brighton Fringe in May and to Impfest in November.  Metaplay is producing this work, conceived and performed by Creative Director, Debra Watson. Further dates to be announced shortly.

From 2017 – 2020 – we have focussed mainly on creating community film projects.

Metaplay is currently taking a break, as the Creative Director, Debra Watson, is on creative sabbatical developing her poetry practice. We hope to bring news of new community projects in 2022.
